What…No Definition?

Those who know me will tell you how fanatical I am about definitions.  They absolutely dictate our actions.

I was coaching a manager of one of our clients (let’s call her Jane) who was taking over the supervision of a group previously managed by another manager who was leaving the organization.  She was told one member of the new group (let’s call him Jim)  said to another, “I hope she isn’t a micro-manager, I hate being micro-managed.”  Jane started to become very defensive and was going to go talk to Jim about it.  I asked Jane, “do you know what Jim’s definition of ‘micro-manager’ is? Jane said ‘no’.  I asked her if she was very clear about what her definition is.  She said ‘no’.  I suggested before she talked to Jim she should have that clear definition in her head and then  ask him about his.  It turned out their definitions were different which sparked a great conversation and agreements on how they work together.  Certain difficulties were averted just by getting clarity and agreement on definitions.

I give this example, one of hundreds, as a reason for how important I believe definitions are.  In most conversations in which I participate, I will usually give my definition of what we are talking about so there is an understanding of where I am coming from.  I always add that my definition is not the ‘right’ one, just the one I came to.

There is one conversation, the one this blog and community are about, that I refuse to give my definition.  That is the definition of ‘success’.  Intentional Success.  I can tell you what I believe Intentional is–and you will hear lots of that.  Success is a different matter.  No one should tell anyone else what they should believe about success.  Success, like Values, are personal.  Each person wrestles with and discovers their own definition of what success means to them.  And, it may change as the person’s journey changes.

Our aim here is to help you and give you some tools to discover for yourself what success means to you and what you can Intentionally do to continually achieve it.  I say continually because there are many who believe success is the journey not a destination.
