PEOPLE CAN ONLY DO WHAT THEY KNOW

Uncategorized Comments Off on PEOPLE CAN ONLY DO WHAT THEY KNOW

Ever been placed in a new position and expected to do the job without a single hour of education or training?  Ever gotten impatient with someone you are trying to teach something new to because they just aren’t getting it?

So many leaders create performance and morale problems because they forget that they can’t expect a new level of performance from any individual until they have given that person the knowledge, skills and tools to do the new job or task.   It’s not that everybody wants to do a bad job.  It’s not that they want to fail or disappoint you.  It’s simply they don’t know—and can’t do what they don’t know.

As a parent, don’t expect levels of conduct or proficiency from your child unless you have thoroughly trained them and clearly communicated your desires and expectations.  If you do, you are only setting yourself and your child up for failure–and that is painful in both the short-term and long-term.

People can only do what they know-so teach and coach them first, then expect.
